The software-only solution uses “sense of touch” technology to detect a variety of objects on the road of different heights, sizes, shapes, and materials – both organic and hard – such as a human body, road debris and other objects. The virtual sensor then prevents the vehicle from running over the object, which could harm human life or damage the vehicle. The safety level virtual sensor will be added on top of the Tactile Processor Platform, which already includes the company’s suite of virtual sensors such as grip estimation, tire health, surface sensing, vehicle health and much more.

According to NHTSA hundreds of children are killed and thousands are injured every year in nontraffic crashes in parking lots, driveways and private roadways. Runover virtual sensors in both autonomous vehicles and vehicles with ADAS systems can help reduce the human death toll by sending signals to these vehicles that alert the car and driver at distinct stages of the runover. The new virtual sensor will enable another critical safety function, allowing vehicles to sense the road, identify the type of material under their tires and alert an initial runover, preventing vehicles from fully running over objects that could lead to a fatal incident.

Three in four Americans are afraid to ride in fully self-driving vehicles. For autonomous vehicles to be trusted by the mainstream, they must be far safer than human-controlled vehicles. To achieve this, they must respond to vehicle-road dynamics just as – or better than – human drivers do; they must be able to not only “see” the road that lies ahead, but also “feel” the road friction, roughness, curves, grades, distresses and objects in the roads under their tires. Runover sensors enable vehicles to sense the road and react to obstacles, hazards, and vulnerable objects, significantly mitigating the damage.

The test was performed at the American Center for Mobility (ACM) test track in Ypsilanti, Michigan and its results were verified by VSI Labs, an active researcher of safety and automated vehicle technologies. AEye’s sensor was integrated into the AV stack of VSI’s research vehicle, which carried out the test.

The new test demonstrates the sensor’s capabilities in adverse weather conditions, and behind a first surface (in this case, a windshield). It was conducted to study the impact of adaptive LiDAR on the performance and safety of automated functionality. AEye’s team used a rain machine to simulate wet weather and mounted the sensor behind a piece of windshield glass to gauge long-range sensor performance in heavy rain. In a second test, its LiDAR sensor was able to detect small objects in a tunnel (through rain and a second surface) at 120 meters. It also detected five bricks and a black dog not visible to the human eye at the same distance, alongside a pedestrian and a child at 110 meters.

In March, the firm announced that VSI Labs had verified its LiDAR’s range, resolution, and speed capabilities, and its ability to place the sensor behind first surfaces (such as the windshield or grill) with a minimal impact to performance. The latter is critical to automotive OEMs, as it provides flexibility in implementing sensors within their vehicle designs without compromising on aesthetics or changing aerodynamics.

AEye’s bistatic architecture streamlines vehicle integration by separating the transmit and receive paths. This provides an optical isolation that ensures any light reflected does not blind the sensor, ensuring optimal performance – even in adverse weather conditions. This performance is further enhanced by AEye’s use of 1550 nanometer lasers that provides detection in areas with lower visibility – such as rain, snow, and smoke.

AEye’s intelligent LiDAR utilizes adaptive sensing to deliver this enhanced performance. The technology addresses the most difficult challenges facing autonomous driving while meeting functional safety requirements. AEye’s adaptive LiDAR is also capable of scanning the scene around it while focusing on important objects to enable safer, quicker, decision-making in complex scenarios.

In addition to performance testing from VSI Labs, the sensors were also validated by NTS, who put them through extreme automotive shock and vibration tests.

Archive:Embark’s self-driving technology cuts through different OEM trucking platforms https://safecarnews.com/embarks-self-driving-technology-cuts-through-different-oem-trucking-platforms/ https://safecarnews.com/embarks-self-driving-technology-cuts-through-different-oem-trucking-platforms/#respond Tue, 06 Apr 2021 07:01:18 +0000 https://safecarnews.com/?p=20596 Embark has launched the Embark Universal Interface (EUI), a set of standardized self-driving components and the flexible interfaces necessary for major truck OEMs to more easily and robustly integrate Embark’s autonomous technology onto their vehicle platforms.

The EUI program sets Embark apart as the first autonomous developer to pursue integration with all four major US OEMs. By focusing on the intersection of four platform specifications, instead of designing to one OEM platform, Embark is building the industry’s first universal system that is intentionally designed to integrate into any platform. Embark has designed its system from the beginning to work across platforms, a decision that has required an immense amount of upfront investment and thoughtfulness around cross-platform trade-offs. The EUI effort is the manifestation of this philosophy into a product.

The EUI achieves its universality through a two-part design. Part one consists of a standardized components package – sensors and compute system – which have been determined through thousands of hours of design, testing, and analysis. Between these standardized components and the truck is part two of the EUI design, a set of physical, electrical, and software interfaces that enable the standardized components package to connect to and communicate with any OEM platform’s steering, braking, throttle, telematics, power, chassis, and HVAC. This two-part approach, standardized components and flexible interfaces, achieves the best of both worlds for Embark and OEMs.

At the center of the interface package is the Embark Gateway, an automotive-grade ECU developed by Embark to enable API communication between Embark’s technology and any OEM platform.

Embark’s long-term vision is for OEMs to integrate Embark’s technology with their truck platforms, which the OEMs will then sell with the maintenance and warranty support carriers demand. Embark supports this model and undertook the EUI effort to accelerate this process. The benefits of the program for Embark and the freight ecosystem manifest themselves in both the short-term and long-term.

In the long run, the EUI program will generate novel learnings around standardized sensor placement, vehicle communication protocols, telematics standardization, power management, and many other areas. These learnings and the associated proprietary designs will inform Embark partnership and integration decisions with each OEM, by helping Embark and OEMs better understand the feasibility of different integration approaches. Most importantly, the learnings from the EUI effort will increase the efficiency, robustness, and safety of future commercial integration programs between Embark and OEMs, resulting in a better product for the end-customer – carriers.

Most major carriers see maintaining multi-OEM fleets as a key element of their business strategy, and the development of EUI sends a strong signal to the trucking industry that Embark is best-positioned to meet the needs of carriers.

Archive:Vayyar offers full-cabin monitoring using 4D radar imaging technology https://safecarnews.com/vayyar-offers-full-cabin-monitoring-using-4d-radar-imaging-technology/ https://safecarnews.com/vayyar-offers-full-cabin-monitoring-using-4d-radar-imaging-technology/#respond Thu, 25 Mar 2021 08:50:51 +0000 https://safecarnews.com/?p=20552 Vayyar has developed the world’s first automotive sensor that covers the entire cabin of any passenger vehicle, with a single Radar-on-Chip (RoC).

Given the 60% spike in global consumer demand for SUVs over the past five years, Vayyar’s production-ready in-car sensor is designed to cover up to three rows. It can also accommodate the rapidly growing number of cars with sunroofs, thanks to uniform rear ceiling installation. Monitoring every seat and footwell, plus the trunk area, the sensor represents a breakthrough safety solution, protecting the most vulnerable vehicle occupants.

Up to 200 children die each year from heatstroke after being left unattended in cars. These tragedies can occur in minutes, since on days as cool as 22°C, the inside of a car, especially one equipped with a sunroof, can quickly reach 47°C.

Vayyar’s full-cabin sensor is fully operational in all lighting and weather conditions and maintains privacy at all times, since no cameras are involved. The ultra-wide field of view and high resolution provided by each sensor’s 48 transceivers are unmatched in the industry, enabling the platform to support multiple advanced applications simultaneously, while replacing numerous single-function sensors.

Given SUV cabin size and the fact that parents of young children comprise the majority of SUV owners, three-row coverage is a critical aspect of in-car sensing. Alternative solutions require two to three single-function sensors to cover the entire SUV cabin, driving up the cost associated with providing larger vehicle safety.

Until now, vehicles with sunroofs have also presented unique challenges in terms of in-cabin sensor positioning, with no option to fit sensors in the ceiling centre. Now OEMs can install just one Vayyar sensor in the rear ceiling area, covering the entire interior.

Vayyar offers OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers a flagship Child Presence Detection (CPD) and enhanced Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) combo, essential for meeting Euro NCAP’s more stringent 2023 and 2025 safety scoring protocols. The platform does so by detecting occupants, classifying children and adults, and detecting posture and position.

The robust, automotive-grade solution also addresses incoming Euro NCAP safety requirements. Vayyar’s AEC-Q100 qualified and ASIL-B compliant platform provides up to 10 in-cabin points for 2023 onwards.

Multifunctionality on a single-chip platform enables automakers to move past the one sensor per function legacy industry approach. Uneconomical and unsustainable, this has traditionally burdened vehicles with more wiring, hardware, software and integration efforts. Instead, one sensor supports many safety applications, significantly reducing complexity and costs.

A data-rich 4D Point Cloud Application Programming Interface (API) provided by Vayyar’s platform enables customers to independently deploy numerous additional safety features over its point cloud layer. These may include Occupant Status (OS), optimised airbag deployment, seat belt pre-tensioning, eCall, gesture recognition, out-of-position detection, intruder detection among others.

Over-the-air (OTA) software updates also allow automakers to add new features long after a vehicle is built, providing added value by reducing development risks and time to market.

  • Unparalleled Spatial Resolution and Target Sensitivity: EAGLE is capable of precisely tracking low-RCS targets, such as pedestrians and motorcyclists, in high multipath-clutter scenarios, enabling autonomous systems to perform complex operations in crowded urban environments.
  • 8-Chip Performance on a 2-Chip Platform: EAGLE delivers the spatial resolution of an 8-chip cascaded radar (24T32R) on a cost-effective, low-power 2-chip (6T8R) hardware platform. Using cost- and power-efficient DSPs for processing rather than FPGAs, EAGLE consumes less than 5W of total power and is smaller than an index card, enabling discrete integration options that preserve the aesthetics of the autonomous platform.

FALCON

FALCON is the world’s most compact 4D imaging radar, delivering high-resolution performance in a 5cm x 5cm package that is smaller than a business card.

  • High-Resolution, Wide Field of View: FALCON delivers 2° horizontal resolution across a wide 120° field of view and can simultaneously measure elevation of the targets as well. Four FALCON sensors fused together can provide a 360° bubble of safety up to 200 meters in all directions and be effective in all environmental conditions.
  • Low Cost, Low Power, Low Profile: Built on a single-chip (3T4R), low-power, cost-effective hardware platform, FALCON consumes less than 2.5W of power and is smaller than a business card, enabling it to be leveraged effectively in a corner-radar automotive ADAS application or an autonomous robotic application where energy efficiency is critical.

While EAGLE and FALCON are full-stack sensor solutions, Oculii’s Virtual Aperture Imaging platform is hardware agnostic, highly modular, and available for licensing.
