Archive:Valeo’s third generation LiDAR chosen by Stellantis https://safecarnews.com/valeos-third-generation-lidar-chosen-by-stellantis/ https://safecarnews.com/valeos-third-generation-lidar-chosen-by-stellantis/#respond Fri, 08 Jul 2022 09:44:59 +0000 https://safecarnews.com/?p=22274 Stellantis has chosen Valeo’s third-generation LiDAR to equip multiple models of its different automotive brands from 2024. The Valeo SCALA 3 LiDAR will enable these vehicles to be certified for level 3 automation, allowing drivers to safely take their hands off the steering wheel and their eyes off the road.

Valeo’s third-generation LiDAR sees everything, even when an object is far ahead, invisible to the human eye. It can identify objects more than 150 meters ahead that neither the human eye, cameras nor radars can, such as a small object with very low reflectivity, for example a tire lying in the road. It recreates a 3D image of the vehicle’s surroundings using a point cloud, with an as yet unparalleled resolution for an automotive system. It can map the ground topology and detect road markings.

Valeo LiDAR also features embedded high performance software based on artificial intelligence algorithms, which enables it to steer the vehicle’s trajectory, anticipating obstacle-free zones on the road ahead. It can self-diagnose and triggers its cleaning system when its field of vision is obstructed. Like all Valeo LiDAR, the technology is automotive grade, meaning that the data it generates remain fully reliable and accurate in all usage and weather conditions (from -40 up to +85°C). It stands as the key component in a sensor system enabling vehicles to achieve approval for SAE conditional driving automation (level 3), meeting the legal requirements of UN-R157.

Valeo’s third generation LiDAR makes driving safer and gives time back to the driver in bothersome driving situations, such as when traveling at low or medium speed in heavy traffic. These challenges are central to the partnership between Stellantis and Valeo. Through its data collection capabilities, this LiDAR will enable new services to be offered to Stellantis’ customers.

Valeo is already world number one in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), equipping one in three new cars globally with its technologies. It was the first, and to date remains the only, company to produce an automotive LiDAR scanner on an industrial scale. More than 170,000 units have been produced and the technology is protected by more than 500 patents. The Group intends to accelerate even further in this field, as announced in February 2022 with the launch of its Move Up plan, the value creation strategy at the heart of the four megatrends disrupting mobility (electrification, ADAS, reinvention of the interior experience and lighting).

Archive:Stellantis to use Valeo’s SCALA 3 LiDAR in its AVs https://safecarnews.com/stellantis-selects-valeos-third-generation-lidar-scala-3-for-its-avs/ https://safecarnews.com/stellantis-selects-valeos-third-generation-lidar-scala-3-for-its-avs/#respond Tue, 14 Jun 2022 14:16:48 +0000 https://safecarnews.com/?p=22193 Stellantis has announced that Valeo’s third-generation LiDAR, called SCALA 3, will be equipped in multiple models of its different automotive brands from 2024. SCALA 3 will enable Stellantis’ vehicles to be certified for SAE Level 3 autonomy, which will allow drivers to safely remove their hands from the steering wheel while the car continues to operate.

Valeo’s third-generation LiDAR is capable of identifying objects more than 150 meters ahead, including small objects with very low reflectivity such as a tire lying in the road. It recreates a 3D image of the vehicle’s surroundings using a point cloud, can map the ground topology, and detect road markings.

Based on AI algorithms, the LiDAR’s embedded high performance software enables it to steer the vehicle’s trajectory, anticipating obstacle-free zones on the road ahead. It can self-diagnose and trigger its cleaning system upon detecting that its field of vision is obstructed. Valeo also confirmed that its new sensor is operable in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures, from -40°C up to +85°C.

Through both the partnership and SCALA 3 itself, Valeo’s aims to enhance road safety and give time back to the driver in certain driving situations, when traveling at low or medium speed in heavy traffic for example. These challenges will be a core aspect of the supplier’s collaboration with Stellantis. Stellantis customers themselves will be able to benefit from new services enabled by the LiDAR’s data collection capabilities.

This increased the range demonstrated earlier in the year, 2.5 times what was demonstrated only 15 months ago, and further advances the path towards productization of its S3 Series LiDAR, a true solid state sensor using an industry-first, scalable CMOS silicon manufacturing process designed for cost-effective, mass-market production.

This test was conducted with a solid-state LiDAR S3 test platform with a single OPA emitter module. The system represents a complete optical link of the emitter output on the transmission end, the detector sensitivity on the receiver end and the signal processing for range readout. Different from the scanning mode, this ranging mode test has the laser beam shooting at the same direction on a target with 10% reflectivity to simulate difficult-to-detect objects. The target positioned at 250 meters was successfully detected under outdoor bright sunlight conditions.

Quanergy’s Optical Phased Array (OPA) provides the most flexible, robust and cost-effective technology specifically designed for advanced mobility applications. With electronic beam steering and no moving parts, OPA-based S Series sensors are ideal for heavy vibration transportation applications such as autonomous trucks, mining, construction and agriculture since they are designed to provide more than 100,000 hours mean time between failure (MTBF). OPA, a 100% CMOS-based technology is also very cost-effective, and therefore it is expected to be a game changer for the transportation market.
